Assisting with Your Statutory Boiler Inspection

A crucial part of owning a steam boiler is complying with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR), which require a formal inspection by a certified Competent Person, such as an engineer from Zurich Insurance. Our role as your boiler service provider is to expertly assist with this process, ensuring a smooth and successful inspection.

We work in partnership with your insurance inspector to make sure your boiler is prepared, safe, and ready for examination. Our services include:

1. Out-of-Service Examination Assistance

This detailed part of the inspection requires your boiler to be shut down, cooled, and prepared. We are on-site to assist the inspector with every step:

  • Dismantling & Cleaning: We professionally open up the boiler and remove internal components, thoroughly cleaning all surfaces of soot and scale. This allows the inspector to conduct a clear and accurate examination for any signs of corrosion or damage.

  • Safety Valve Overhaul: We assist in the removal and overhaul of your boiler's critical safety valves, preparing them for the inspector's detailed review.

2. In-Service Examination Assistance

After the boiler is reassembled, the inspector will carry out the final operational checks. Our technicians are present to facilitate these tests:

  • Testing Safety Devices: We operate the boiler as required by the inspector to test all safety controls, including the low water cut-offs (LWCO) and pressure limits, confirming they shut down the system correctly.

  • Witnessing Safety Valve Lifts: We raise the boiler pressure to a point where the safety valves lift and re-seat at the correct pressures, as required by the inspector for certification.

By having us present during your statutory inspection, you can be confident that the process will be efficient and compliant. We are there to address any issues on the spot and ensure a seamless handover back to your operational team.

Areas Covered: Sussex, Kent, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and other Southern Counties.

Steam Plant Applications

Here are some of the key industrial sectors that rely on steam:

  • Power Generation: This is one of the most significant uses of steam. Large power plants, whether they run on fossil fuels, nuclear energy, or biomass, use high-pressure, superheated steam to turn turbines, which in turn generate electricity.

  • Food and Beverage: The food industry uses steam for cooking, pasteurization, and sterilization of equipment to maintain strict hygiene standards and ensure product safety. Breweries and distilleries, for example, use steam for heating during the brewing and distillation processes.

  • Pharmaceutical and Healthcare: Hospitals and pharmaceutical companies require "clean" or "pure" steam for sterilizing medical instruments, equipment, and maintaining sanitary environments. Steam is also used for humidification and heating within these facilities.

  • Chemical and Petrochemical: Steam is essential for many chemical reactions, distillation processes, and for heating reactors. It's used to separate components in crude oil at refineries and to produce a wide range of chemicals.

  • Textile and Paper Mills: In the textile industry, steam is used for dyeing, drying, and finishing fabrics. Paper mills use steam to dry paper and for various other processes in pulp and paper production.

  • Manufacturing: A wide variety of manufacturing facilities use steam for heating, drying, and treating materials. This includes the automotive industry for processes like vulcanizing rubber for tires, and the wood and furniture industry for drying and heat-treating wood.

  • Agriculture: Steam has some unique applications in agriculture, such as soil steaming, a "green" farming method used to kill weeds, fungi, and pests in the ground without harsh chemicals.
